BUSD Chávez Essay Contest
The dates of the contest are from March 1 to March 19, 2012
To celebrate the legacy of Cesar Chavez, BUSD invites all 2nd -12th grade students to participate in an essay contest! Students must submit a one-page essay in English or Spanish (whichever language you prefer) on the following topic: One of Cesar Chavez’s core values is service to others with the purpose of empowering those for whom the service is intended. What type of service projects have you been involved in and how did they empower those who received it? If you have not been involved in service projects, can you think of a project in which you can become involved? How will it empower the recipients of the service project?

César Chávez Celebration Event
Tuesday, March 27, 2012, 3:30pm – 7pm
Join us for a day of cultural arts performances, spoken word, speakers, live music, and informational tables to honor the legacy of farmworker organizer César Chávez. Performers and Presenters include Rafael Jesús González, Joy Moore, Cuauhtli Mitotiani Mexica – Aztec Dance youth troupe, Quenepas – Puerto Rican Bomba and Plena music and dance youth ensemble, YeYe – Latin American Afro-fusion band, Earth Amplified – ‘Green Hip Hop’ and Conscious ‘Roots-Rap-Reggae,’ and La Peña Community Chorus. Information booths: Farm Fresh Choice, Planting Justice, SNAG, BAHIA (Bay Area Hispano Institute for Advancement), Label GMO’s: Right to Know, and Food First/The Institute for Food and Development Policy.

“State of Latinos in Berkeley” Forum
Thursday, April 19, 6:30pm
Local Latino leaders and community members will be holding a public forum on Thursday, April 19th at 6:30 at the Berkeley Adult School, to discuss the “State of Latinos in Berkeley,” and how Cesar Chavez’s legacy of activism can empower and improve the lives of Latinos in Berkeley. This event will also celebrate Chavez’s legacy and the 50th Anniversary of the United Farm Workers.
Speakers will address issues facing the Berkeley Latino community such as health and education disparities, immigration, representation of Latinos in local government, and discuss ways in which the community can address these critical issues. Please join us in celebrating the life and legacy of Cesar Chavez and in a dialogue about how we can work together to improve the lives of Latinos in Berkeley.

Pilot Workshop for Teachers: How to Use The Chávez Memorial Solar Calendar Site
Saturday, April 21, 8:30am – 12:30pm
Training for twelve 3rd and 5th grade BUSD teachers will cover The Reasons for the Seasons (5th Grade) and FOSS materials (3rd Grade). The workshop is aimed at helping to meeting State Education Standards in Science and History/Social Science. Workshop includes 2 hours of classroom instruction, and 1 1/2 hours at the Memorial Solar Calendar site at César Chávez Park.

San Francisco César E. Chávez Holiday Parade & Festival 2012
Saturday, April 21, 10am – 6pm
The 12th Annual César E. Chávez Holiday Parade & Festival has become a significant event in the Mission. The parade draws a diverse crowd of participants and attendees from different demographics and cultures. The parade ends with the 24th Street Fair.
The Festival after the parade offers an opportunity for attendees to learn about the life of César Chávez and while enjoying the day in a historic Mission neighborhood. This year’s festival will feature a focus on youth with the César E. Chávez art contest winners; a teach-in on César’s life and work; a special César E. Chávez Educational Achievement Award ceremony recognizing Latino honor roll students in San Francisco public schools.
